Edward George

Edward is a visual and sound artist, writer, director and producer.  He co-founded the multi-media arts group Flow Motion with Anna Piva in 1996 and their sound art performances have taken place at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, and the Science Museum Dana Centre in London as well as other international destinations.  Edward was Artistic Associate for the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in 2010 and is currently working on a collaborative on-line archival project exploring the theme of the Promised Land.

My first response to his piece on the promise land is that it seems sort of abstract and surreal. I like how his artwork is somewhat cloudy creating a sense of mystery. The images of plants shows natural side of the ‘promise land’ which connotes the purity of that place as everything is still intact and hasn’t been destroyed by men. When working with this artist I found that he had an unusual outlook on what you would conventionally call art, from working with him I learnt that you should keep your mind open to all the possibilities that you can think of and not to limit your ideas we did this by questioning everything as then it allows you to answer them and then you get a deeper understanding of what you are trying to create. Also I learnt how to archive and that everything from the past can be an archive.

I like his technique of layering as it creates a sense of depth, and as it seems misty it’s as if it represents time the further you go back the cloudier your brain gets it shows that you are forgetting. I also could signify the past as the layers and mist create space. The gold coin in the middle brings the image together , it represents power and as it shows a map of the Caribbean It signifies that his memories is of that place and how that is a part of his culture, also that in his mind his idea of a promise land is the Caribbean.
I will include his idea that anything can be an archive when collecting my primary sources which relate to my five senses, over my summer holiday also his technique of using layering to create space, and it will show elements of my past.
